USING MODERN MATERIALS TO HELP YOU CREATE THE VINTAGE LOOK

I know a lot of you like to use the vintage look in your homes. The problem is that these days buying period appropriate items for your house is not as cheap as it used to be. Demand has gone up, which has led to prices rising too.

Fortunately, even if you are on a tight budget, it is still possible to create the look you want. Surprisingly, a lot of modern materials can be adapted and used to add a touch of vintage chic to any home. Here are a few examples.

Canvas prints - You can buy cheap canvas prints from hello canvas, in any style. The nice thing about these prints is that they do not look cheap at all. Modern print firms can take any image and turn it into a picture. This makes it easy to create a replica of the artwork that was popular in the era you want to invoke.

Modern print fabrics - You can do something similar when it comes to your soft furnishings. Provided you are prepared to shop around you can find print fabrics that feature the designs that were popular in the past. If you know the name of the pattern you want a simple online search will enable you to quickly locate a supplier.

Once you have the fabric you can do what you like with it. Suddenly, making period curtains, covers and cushions become possible. Even if you are not good at sewing you can still make many items by using fabric glue and heat activated glue strips to create neat hems. But if you have to join two pieces of fabric together you may need to ask a friend for a little help.

Buy damaged items - If there is a particular piece of furniture you want, look around online, and in junk shops, to see if you can find one. It does not matter if it is damaged because you can usually repair it. There are plenty of how-to videos available on YouTube to show you how to use it. If it is not possible to repair it, you could just display it in a way which keeps the damaged side up against the wall. That way the damage will not be visible.

Tap into 3D printing - If a friend owns an ornament, or other small items, that you particularly like there is a chance that you can have a replica created by a specialist 3D print firm. There are now quite a few firms that offer their services to the public. In the past, this would have been a very expensive option, but prices are falling. The materials used for 3D are getting cheaper and the printers are getting faster. All kinds of items can be recreated, including those made from metal.

Where to get inspiration - If you need inspiration, there is plenty available online. This resource is a particularly good source of information. There are over 1,000 vintage home decor images on that page, with more being added all the time.
